ROC-M Radio Operator Certificate - Marine
                              (VHF radio certificate)

Challenge Sailing School is offering a One day VHF Radio Certificate Course (ROC-M), by Zoom, on:               

 

Saturday March 7, 2026.

Course commences at 9 am PST

 

The cost is $175.00 plus gst.  Partner or family member cost is $155.75.

Includes:

1. Manual,

2. Supporting documention / study notes

3. On line study guide,

4. 6 hour Course,

5. Exam,

6. Review of exam,

7. Registration with Can Boat (formerly known as Canadian Power Squadron)

8. ROC-M certificate.

What kind of document do you need to operate a boat in Canada?

​

1. PCOC.        To operate any motorized recreational boat in Canada you need a PCOC -

                                a Pleasure Craft Operator Card.  It's a CARD.  It is not a licence, nor is it a certificate.

                               The PCO Card is valid for life.

 

2. ROC - M      Any user of a marine VHF radio requires a ROC - M. 

                                A Restricted Operator Certificate. - Marine. 

                                It's a Certificate, not a licence.  The ROC - M Certificate is valid for life.

3. ROC - CM   As above but for commercial mariners typically working on commercial vessels.   

                                Certificate is valid for life.

4. Radio Station Licence  

                                Operators of a pleasure craft in Canadian waters,

                                using a pleasure craft VHF marine radio do NOT require a Radio Station Licence. 

                                Radio Station Licences are issued to shore based facilities - like a marina. 

                                They are valid for one year and must be renewed annually for a fee. 

                                Canadian vessel operators taking their vessels out of Canadian waters should obtain a

                                Radio Station Licence which will be valid for one year.

 

5. ROC - A      Any pilot operating a plane in Canada needs a ROC-A

                                 (Restricted Operator Certificate - Aeronautical)

                                 It is a Certificate.  Not a licence.  Valid for life.

                                 A Pilot with a ROC-A certificate must still obtain a ROC - M to operate a Marine VHF radio.

                                 The ROC-M course content is significantly different from the ROC-M course content.
